Runner-up in Highway 1 Challenge

| MOUNT
VERNON, IA - GRJ 18 Elite was defeated
by Nike Six Pack in the championship match of the 2002 Highway 1
Challenge at Cornell College here Saturday. Six Pack, a
perennial Iowa power, edged GRJ in game one of the championship match
27-25 and then won game two 25-16.
 GRJ reached the championship match by defeating
the tournament's number one seed Northwest Illinois Juniors in the
semi-finals. After dropping game one 17-25, GRJ fought back to
claim games two and three 25-15, 15-7.
GRJ downed Iowa Rockets 18 Black in the
quarter-finals.
GRJ and Nike Six Pack had identical pool play
7-1 pool play records. Six Pack was awarded first place in the
pool based on
criteria.

Finishes First in Flight Four
|
WARRENSBURG,
MO - The GRJ 18 Elite team competed in
the 20-team Gold Heart Challenge on the campus of Central Missouri
State University here March 16 and 17. The 20 teams 
here
represented five states: Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri,
Oklahoma. GRJ competed against teams from each of the five
states.
For the second week in a row GRJ was undefeated
on Sunday going 10-0 in games and finishing first in Flight Four.
Also for the second week in a row GRJ found
itself in an opening pool with the eventual tournament champion.
GRJ opened pool play Saturday morning Longview 18-1 High
Performance. Longview defeated Andover Juniors in the tournament
championship on Sunday. Team Tulsa finished third overall.

Sweeps Through Sunday Matches at Asics
Image Sport Classic

MOINES, IA - The GRJ 18 Elite team
swept through six opponents here on Sunday en route to winning the
silver division of the Asics Image Sport Classic. GRJ used two
inspired comebacks to help vault them into the finals of their
division.
In game one of their quarter-final match, GRJ
found itself trailing the Iowa Rockets 19-24 before reeling off seven
unanswered points to win 26-24. GRJ then easily won game two
25-15.
GRJ found itself in a similar situation in its
semi-final match. Trailing Eastside Thunder 20-24 in game one, again
the team fought back and handed Eastside a 26-24 defeat. Game
two was all Great River as won 25-10.
GRJ downed the Wolverines of Wall Lake, Iowa to
claim the silver division championship and finish the 31-team
tournament in 9th place overall.
A slow start in a tough pool Saturday knocked
GRJ into the silver bracket. GRJ was defeated by Panther's 18
and IPVA 18 in its first two matches on Saturday.
River City Juniors 18 (Omaha, NE) defeated IPVA
18 to claim the gold division championship.
