Linda Crum |
| Head Volleyball Coach | |
| Iowa State University | |
| Ames, Iowa | |
| Linda
Crum is in her third year as the leader of the Iowa State volleyball
program.
A graduate of Central High School in Davenport, Iowa, Crum returned to Iowa after spending four years in Durham, N.C., leading Duke to a 46-66 overall record and a 29-33 Atlantic Coast Conference mark. At Duke, she introduced her exciting, fast-paced style of play that brought enthusiasm to the volleyball program. After her first team posted a 7-18 record, Crum’s Blue Devil squad improved to 15-12 overall and placed third in the ACC with a 10-6 mark. Three Duke players earned all-ACC honors that season, including ACC Rookie of the Year Sarah Peifer, a member of Crum’s initial recruiting class. In all, Crum had five all-ACC selections and more than 20 of her players earned all-ACC academic honors. A 1987 University of Iowa graduate, Crum was a four-year Hawkeye starter who was twice selected team captain and MVP. In 1985, she was a second-team all-Big Ten selection and won the Lou Ginsberg Humanitarian Award. Crum was a student assistant coach for the Hawkeyes in 1986. Crum was named head coach at St. Ambrose University in her hometown of Davenport prior to the 1987 season. Crum was honored as NAIA District 15 Coach of the Year that fall, leading her team to a 45-6 record. Crum’s first stint at Iowa State came in 1988, when she joined the Cyclone staff as an assistant to head coach Vicki Mealer. The Cyclones improved from 12-17 her first season to 22-12 in 1990, her third and final season as an assistant. The 1989 ISU squad made the school’s first visit to a postseason event, qualifying for the National Invitational Volleyball Tournament. The 1990 Cyclones tied the school record for most conference victories, going 8-4 in the Big Eight Conference. Dana Burson, Janice Ninemire and Lisa Burke were all first-team all-Big Eight selections during Crum’s initial tenure in Ames. Crum left Iowa State to accept her second head coaching position at Butler in 1991. In her only season at the Indianapolis, Ind., school, Crum led the team to a 16-17 record and a fourth-place finish in the Midwestern Collegiate Conference. Crum left Butler to serve three seasons as an assistant at Ohio State (1991-95). In 1994, Crum helped the Buckeyes to a 29-3 record, a Big Ten championship and an NCAA Final Four appearance. She was named the head coach at Duke in April of 1995. Throughout all of her coaching stops, Crum has been extremely active in club and other volleyball organizations, as well as conducting numerous presentations at coaching clinics. Early on in her career, she served as assistant coach of the Eastern Iowa Junior National Team in 1987 and succeeded Mealer as the coordinator of the Mid-America Junior Development program in Lamoni from 1988-89. She was also a head coach at the 1988 USVBA Junior National Championship in Ft. Collins, Ohio.
