2003 TRI-STATE CAMP INFORMATION

The Tri-State Championship Volleyball Camp is held annually the last full week of July at Mediapolis (Iowa) High School, 725 North Northfield, Mediapolis, Iowa..   

This year's camp will be July 21-24, 2003.  It is open to any girl who will be in 7th - 12th grade in the fall of 2003.

The camp includes morning and afternoon instruction sessions from a featured clinician, a knowledgeable, enthusiastic camp staff, daily skills competitions, a week-long volleyball league, and free camp t-shirt.  The camp fee is $95.  It is nonrefundable after July 15, 2003.

Monday, July 21

Stu Sherman
Head Volleyball Coach

Head coach Stu Sherman has consistently produced winning seasons at Graceland since his arrival in 1993. Over the past nine years as the head coach, he has guided his teams to eight Top Ten finishes at the National Intramural-Recreational Sports Association’s National Men’s Volleyball Championships. In 1998, Sherman’s Yellowjackets captured the National NIRSA Championship crown. He also coached the 1994 and 1999 teams to second place finishes in the NIRSA tournament and finished third in 2001. The 2000-01 team finished the season 26-12 advancing his career record to 279-97. That is an incredible 74.2 winning percentage.

 

As a member of the USA Volleyball Coaching Accreditation Program Cadre, Stu conducts national coaching clinics around the country and was named the 1998 “Outstanding Clinician” by USA Volleyball. He is also a National Instructor for American Sports Education Programs. Sherman has been a coach for the USA Volleyball’s National Development Camps since 1982 and served as an assistant coach on the USA Youth National Team that captured the gold medal in the North America/Central America/Caribbean Championships in 1994.

 

Mr. Sherman’s affiliation with Graceland volleyball started in 1981 as a player when he earned the conference’s “Most Valuable Player” award two years in a row. Sherman played from 1981 thru 1985 and graduated from Graceland in 1986 with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Liberal Studies. Stu went on to earn his Mater’s Degree in Physical Education with an emphasis in Sports Administration from Eastern Kentucky University, and has done some work on a Ph. D. in Sport Psychology at the University of Utah.

 

In addition to his coaching duties, Sherman serves as a faculty member in the Health and Movements Science Division.

 

Stu is also the parent of one son, Sterling, who is 11 years old.  This marks coach Sherman's second appearance at the Tri-State Volleyball Camp.

Stacy Boudreau
Head Volleyball Coach

Stacy Boudreau is the Head Volleyball Coach at Iowa Wesleyan College.   A standout performer for the Tigers on the volleyball court and on the track, Boudreau coached her team to a top three finish in the Midwest Classic Conference last season.  In just her first year, Boudreau has already coached an All-American, the Conference Player of the Year, 4 All-Conference players, and 2 All-Region players.  She served as Assistant Volleyball Coach for Iowa Wesleyan College in 2001.

As a player, Boudreau earned NAIA All-American Honors at Iowa Wesleyan College while collecting NAIA Region VII and Midwest Classic Conference first team accolades. She was also honored as an NAIA Scholar-Athlete All-American. In all, Boudreau left as IWC’s career leader in kills (928) and still holds single-season school records for blocks (109, 2000), kills (516, 2000) and kills/game average (4.1, 2000) while setting the standard for most kills in a match (31 vs. St. Ambrose University, 2000). IWC was a combined 41-32 in Boudreau’s two seasons and won the school’s first Midwest Classic Conference regular season and tournament titles while advancing to two NAIA Region VII Tournaments.

On the track, Boudreau picked up NAIA All-American honors during the indoor and outdoor season. She also participated at the Drake Relays in the heptathlon during 2001 and placed seventh with a school-record 4,698 points. Boudreau was named the Midwest Classic Conference’s Female Athlete of the Year for track in her two seasons and won five events and placed second in four others during her final league outdoor meet.  Boudreau continues to compete in track and field finishing 6th and 5th in the heptathlon at the 2002 and 2003 Drake Relays. 

Boudreau is also the Head Men’s and Women’s Track Coach at Iowa Wesleyan, which has had much recent success.  The women’s team won the school’s first conference championship this past year, while Boudreau was named the Midwest Classic Conference Coach of the Year and a tiger athlete named the Conference Athlete of the Year.  Boudreau has coached 10 conference champions as well as 6 national qualifiers in track and field.

Flip Piontek
Assistant Volleyball Coach

In his 17th season at Central Missouri State, Phil "Flip" Piontek assists Coach Peggy Martin in teaching the Jennies many of the technical aspects of volleyball.  He also handles most of the duties involving the team's statistics.

Piontek joined the Jennies program in time for the 1986 season.  He spent three years prior to that (from 1982-1984) as an assistant at the U.S. Air Force Academy, where he helped the Falcons win two league titles and finish third at the 1983 NCAA Division II Tournament.

In the summer of 2001, Piontek coached the Missouri/Kansas High Performance Team to a third-place finish at the inaugural USA Volleyball High Performance Colorado Springs Cup.

In 1998, Piontek served as co-coach of Kansas City's first professional women's volleyball team.  He helped the Lightning to a 7-1 record and a regular-season league title before the fell in the semifinals of the playoffs to the eventual champion Nebraska Tornados.

An Air Force veteran who played volleyball while in the service, Piontek has helped several teams qualify for the USAV Nationals as a player.  He is also a nationally certified referee and scorekeeper.  During the 1996 Summer Olympic Games in Atlanta, Piontek served as a line judge for the beach volleyball competition.

Flip Piontek earned his bachelor's degree in history in 1975 from the Academy.  He also received a master's degree in history from Indiana University later that same year and a second master's degree in business administration from Central Missouri State in 1988.

Piontek and his wife, Stacy, have three sons, Joe (12), Matt (10), and Nick (6), and a daughter Hally (4).
