2005 TRI-STATE CAMP INFORMATION

The Tri-State Championship Volleyball Camp is held annually at the end of July at Mediapolis (Iowa) High School, 725 North Northfield, Mediapolis, Iowa..   

This year's camp will be July 25-28, 2005.  It is open to any girl who will be in 7th - 12th grade in the fall of 2005.

The camp includes morning and afternoon instruction sessions from a featured clinician, a knowledgeable, enthusiastic camp staff, daily skills competitions, a week-long volleyball league, and free camp t-shirt.  The camp fee is $95.  It is nonrefundable after July 15, 2005.

Mashallah Farokhmanesh enters his second year as Associate Head Coach with the University of Iowa volleyball team.  As associate head coach he is a part of all phases of Hawkeye volleyball.

Dr. Farokhmanesh, known simply as Farokh (Fah-ROW-k), has extensive experience as both a player and coach. While in high school, he played on three state championship teams. While earning his B.A. degree in physical education from the Teacher Training College in Tehran, Iran, Farokh played on a men's squad that won two college championships and was honored all four years with all-star recognition.

Following college, Farokh went on to play for the Iranian National Team. During his seven year tenure on the team, Farokh was elected captain and also played internationally including teams from Russia and China.

Farokh began his coaching career in his home country of Iran when he was named head volleyball coach for Estahan High School.

Coach Farokhmanesh left for the United States in 1977 to continue his education, and earned his masters degree in physical education at Western Illinois University and his educational doctorate (EdD) in elementary school physical education Brigham Young University.

Farokh has been active at both USA Volleyball summer camps and clinics as a coach. In fact, Farokh has been a part of the Iowa volleyball scene before as a coach and it was at a summer camp at Graceland College in Lamoni, Iowa, that he met and later married Cindy Fredrick.

When Fredrick was named as the Weber State head coach at Ogden, UT, Farokhmanesh was hired as an assistant. Together the pair earned a Big Sky conference championship in 1988 and also the school's first NCAA tournament bid. After four years with Weber State, the duo left for Washington State. At Washington State, Farokh was part of a Cougar program that experienced seven seasons with 20-plus wins and nine NCAA tournament appearances. The Cougars made it to the NCAA Elite Eight round twice, most recently in 2002. From 1989 through 2003, Farokh helped lead Washington State to a 278-192 record.

Farokh and Fredrick have one son, Ali.

Coach Lana Smith

Lana Smith is in her seventh season as head volleyball coach at Simpson and has compiled a 112-93 record.

Smith led the Storm to a 23-10 record this past season, a second place finish in the Iowa Conference and a #2 seed in the IIAC Tournament. Smith earned Coach of the Year honors in 2001 awarded by the Iowa Conference as that particular year, Simpson ended Central College's 56-match winning streak. Coach Smith has been appointed to the NCAA Division III Women's Volleyball Committee where she'll serve a four-year term.

Smith was head volleyball coach for Indianola High School for nine years prior to coming to Simpson where her teamed claimed five conference titles and appeared in four state tournaments. Coach Smith is a graduate of the University of Iowa where she also competed in volleyball. She remains among the top 20 in Hawkeye history in blocks, kills, service aces and digs.  In addition to her duties as head coach, Smith is Simpson's senior women's administrator.

How to Coach High School Volleyball: The Formula for Success

Tom Keating led the Dubuque Wahlert Eagles to 10 state titles during his tenure there.  A very highly regarded clinician, Coach Keating is first and only coach to win 10 state volleyball titles in the state of Iowa. Along with the 10 titles, Dubuque Wahlert was state runner-up three times during his 20 year tenure as head coach.

Keating is a four-time Iowa Coach of the Year and more than 20 of his players competed at the NCAA Division I level.

In 1994, he coached the Mizuno High School All-American Team.

With more than 650 wins and 11 conference championships, Keating is considered one of the top high school coaches in the country.

Coach Keating recently accepted the position of Principal at Cedar Rapids Xavier High School.
