2008 FEATURED CLINICIANS:

Monday, July 28th

Steve Williams

Assistant Volleyball Coach
Western Illinois University
Macomb, Illinois
We welcome Steve Williams back for his second Tri-State Camp.  Coach Williams was a featured clinician in 2006.  He is now entering his seventh year as the assistant volleyball coach at Western Illinois University.

Williams joined the WIU staff in August of 2002. His duties include coordinating recruiting, conducting individual skill sessions, arranging team travel, scheduling tape exchanges, and directing summer camps. He is also responsible for the scouting and evaluating of the team’s and opponent’s serving and serve receive tendencies. Williams excels at training and enhancing blocking skills and is the primary reason the team was second in the conference in blocking in 2005 and had two of the top-three blockers in the Mid-Con in 2006.

Williams has coached club volleyball in the Macomb, Ill., area the past four years. For the last three seasons he has guided the Unlimited VBC that consisted of elite athletes from the surrounding areas. He also coaches at various summer camps in Iowa, Illinois, and Wisconsin during the summer.

Prior to Western Illinois, Williams coached for seven seasons at Sports Performance Volleyball Club (SPVB), one of the country’s premier volleyball clubs. During his tenure at SPVB, he was the head coach of many teams at various age levels. His most successful team was his 2002 18-Blue team that finished fifth at the USA Junior Olympic National Championships and earned the bronze medal at the A.A.U. National Championships. While at SPVB, his coaching duties included working with several Division I collegiate teams and skills camps as well as numerous elite high school skills camps. Williams also gained international coaching experience while at SPVB when working with several coaches from Japan and China. He worked with the now defunct United States Professional Volleyball (USPV) league as a member of the coaching staff that evaluated and selected players to join the league.

Williams also served as the assistant coach at Class A perennial power Wheaton St. Francis from 1999-2001. The 2000 team finished second in the IHSA state tournament. Several of the athletes who Williams worked with in the high school and club circuits have continued their playing career at the collegiate level.

Dan Friend

Dan Friend

Volleyball Coach
Lewis University & USA Men's Junior National Team
Romeoville, Illinois
If Dan Friend looks familiar to you, perhaps you remember him from the 2007 Tri-State camp when Coach Friend accompanied his fiancé and featured clinician Lorelee Smith.  We are very happy to have Coach Friend back, this year as a featured clinician.

This spring Coach Friend was named an Assistant Coach for the 2008 U.S. Men’s Junior National Team.  He will spend most of his summer months in Chula Vista, California with the Junior National Team which will then compete in the NORCECA Under-21 Continental Championship June 30-July 5 in El Salvador.

Coach Friend just completed his fourth season at the helm of the Lewis University men's volleyball program. In his 11th season as a head coach, Friend began the 2007-08 season with a 203-130 overall record.

Last season Friend led the Flyers to a 17-14 overall record, upping his record to 44-46 with the Lewis men. Lewis reached the postseason for the first time under Friend, falling to Ball State in the opening round of the conference tournament. Three Flyers earned All-MIVA recognition following the season and nine made the all-academic list.

Before arriving at Lewis, Friend served as the men's and women's volleyball head coach at Newman University. Friend started the men's volleyball program at Newman in 2002 and led the team to the NAIA national championship match in its third year. He coached the Jets to a 20-win season in 2003 and was named NAIA National Coach of the Year after leading the 2004 squad to a 29-11 mark and national runner-up finish.

As Newman's women's head volleyball coach, Friend guided the program to 22 or more wins in each of his three seasons at the helm. He coached 15 all-conference, eight all-region and two All-America players. In 2003, the Jets posted a 32-8 overall record and 14-2 league mark.

Before coaching at Newman, Friend spent three seasons as an assistant women's volleyball coach at Washburn University. Prior to that, Friend was a student assistant at Washburn for four years.

Friend also coached and played for a college-age men's team called USA Athletes on five different summer tours. That team took first at the 2007 Scottish Open, 2004 Aruba Invitational and the 2002 Down Under Games (Australia). In 2003 the team finished third in the DKV Invitational (Netherlands).

Friend is a native of Topeka, Kan., and a graduate of Washburn University. He earned a bachelor's degree in athletic training and exercise physiology at Washburn before completing a master's degree in sports administration at the University of Kansas.

Friend is a certified athletic trainer who has worked in a rehabilitation clinic and at the University of Kansas. Friend is a member of the AVCA and the United States Volleyball Association. He also competes in the summer months on the EVP and AVP.
